Level of AI used

The dark-software-factory scale.

β“˜ What do the levels mean? Β· the Shapiro Scale

The 5–6 Levels of AI-Assisted Software Engineering (Shapiro Scale)

Level 0 β€” Manual Coding / Spicy Autocomplete (No AI approval bypass)
You write traditional code manually, or use basic inline syntax suggestions (like early tab-complete) that act as a glorified spell-checker.
Level 1 β€” AI Intern / Atomic Tasks
The AI handles discrete, low-context, repetitive tasks like writing single unit tests, boilerplate code, or simple functions while you direct every step.
Level 2 β€” AI-Native Pairing / Junior Colleague Workflow
Conversational or chat-assisted coding where you prompt, the AI suggests multi-line implementations or file diffs, and you manually review and test almost everything. This is where the vast majority of developers and teams currently operate.
Level 3 β€” Developer / Parallel Tasks with Human Review
The AI acts as an active partner running parallel tasks, refactoring across multiple files, and managing small workflows, though a human closely inspects and gates the output.
Level 4 β€” Engineering Team / Spec-Driven & Unattended Execution
You write product specifications or high-level goals instead of code. Multiple agentic loops execute builds, run tests, and self-correct, shifting the human role toward product management, architecture, and oversight.
Level 5 β€” The Dark Software Factory ("Black Box")
Fully autonomous software development. A high-level product spec or business goal goes in, and verified production code comes out with zero human code-review or intervention in the inner loop. Humans only design and maintain the factory harnesses, safety guardrails, and simulation environments.
